STAR helps you tell a story from start to finish, so the other person can follow along and remember it.
When to use it
Good for questions like "Tell me about a time when...": a tricky moment, something you're proud of, or a mistake.
Steps
Situation
Set the scene in a sentence or two. Where were you, what was going on?
Task
What was your job in all this? What had to happen?
Action
What did you actually do? This is the main part, so take your time.
Result
How did it end? If you learned something, say it.
Example answer
Our monthly report kept coming in late (Situation). It was my job to collect everyone's numbers before the finance meeting (Task). So I looked at where things got stuck, agreed earlier deadlines with each team and made a simple shared checklist (Action). The next month the report was ready three days early, and it stayed that way. Honestly, I was surprised how much a bit of structure took the stress out of it (Result).
Tips
- Keep the start short. People care most about what you did.
- Say "I", not just "we". They want to hear your part.
- A result doesn't have to be a number. What you learned counts too.
